Top 10 Badminton Rules Every Beginner Should Know (2025)
New to badminton? Here are the 10 most important rules to help you get started on the right foot. Learn how the game is played, what counts as a fault, and how to score points like a pro!
1. 🎲 Coin Toss:
Before the game begins, a coin toss decides who serves first or chooses the starting court side. The other player gets the remaining option.
2. 🏸 Don’t Touch the Net:
It’s a fault if you touch the net with your racquet, clothing, or body at any time during play.
3. 🛑 No Carrying or Slinging:
You must strike the shuttle cleanly. Holding or carrying the shuttle on your racquet is not allowed.
4. 🔄 No Reaching Over:
Wait until the shuttle crosses to your side before hitting it. Hitting over the net prematurely is a fault.
5. 📐 Serve Must Be Diagonal:
Serves must land in the diagonally opposite service box. Serving straight or to the wrong side results in a fault.
6. ⬇️ Serve Below the Waist:
During service, strike the shuttle below waist level. Your racquet must be angled downward, and your feet must stay behind the service line.
7. ✅ Win a Rally, Earn a Point:
Every rally won gives you 1 point. Games are played to 21 points, win by 2, best of three games.
8. ⚠️ How to Win a Rally:
Win the point if your opponent:
- Misses the shuttle
- Hits out of bounds
- Commits a fault
- Lets it land in their court
9. 🔁 One Hit Per Side:
Your team can only strike the shuttle once before it crosses the net. Double hits or multiple contacts on one side are faults.
10. 🚫 Ceiling = Fault:
If the shuttle hits the ceiling or any overhead object, the rally ends with a fault.
